THE CHALLENGE
The demolition works were undertaken as part of an advanced works package prior to the redevelopment Coventry Universities school of Arts and Humanities located in Coventry City centre.
Demolition of the Bugatti building had technical and logistical issues which required appropriate safety controls and safety mitigation measures. Challenges on the project were the proposed demolition sequence and methodology, the proximity of the Bugatti Building in relation to other University buildings which remained operational for the duration of the demolition works.
KEY CONSIDERATIONS
Retention of the physically adjoining boiler house which will need to remain operational.
Safety issues in relation to physical constraints of the City centre site and proximity to adjacent public highways and footpaths.
Existing underground archaeology, natural water courses, potential UXO and existing buried services.Potential Asbestos and other controlled substance contamination.
Co-ordination with other works being undertaken by the University and more generally in the City Centre as part of Coventry’s European City of Culture status.

THE OUTCOME
The project was completed in line with all tender and contract requirements.
RESULTS
Successfully coordinated health and safety matters throughout the life of the project. CDM regulations were adhered to and all client duties discharged.
