THE CHALLENGE

KOK provided Principal Designer and CDM Advisor services on Phase 1 of the £150million University of Salford Peel Park Campus Masterplan, a development strategy that when implemented would create a more attractive, vibrant, and successful campus. The Masterplan consists of a multi-phased programme of projects, to be developed over a fifteen-year period. Phase 1 of the Masterplan encompasses the programme of projects delivered within the first 5-year tranche of the Masterplan.

Forming a new gateway to the University of Salford’s Peel Park Campus, the New Adelphi Building was the key project of the Phase 1 Masterplan works. The £55m multi-functional Arts, Media and

Performance Facility straddles a major route across the campus and is the new home for music, performance, art, design, and architecture students, providing a rich environment for creativity, arts and culture on campus.

The state-of-the-art facility includes a black box theatre, an external theatre, multi-media state of the art recording and practice studios, internal and external exhibition spaces, design studios, scenery and props workshops, dance studios, lecture theatres and teaching spaces.

KEY CONSIDERATIONS

Demolition of former research facilities and relocation of main Campus services distribution buildings including primary HV substation and network feeder cables.

Management and removal of significant amounts of infrastructure asbestos and chemical contamination within buildings to be demolished.

Major construction work within a busy University Campus.

Transportation and fixing of massive structural steel members to support cantilevered structure.

THE OUTCOME & RESULTS

Successfully coordinated health and safety matters throughout the Project. Worked with the Project Team to SFAIRP ensure CDM and other UK construction safety Regulations were complied with, and all Client duties discharged.

Successfully completed in line with Client requirements and Statutory Regulations.
